چکیده

The Tibetan Plateau, the world’s largest orogenic plateau, hosts thousands of lakes that play a prominent role as water resources, environmental archives, and sources of natural hazards such as glacier lake outburst floods. Previous studies reported that the size of the lakes on the Tibetan Plateau has been changing rapidly in recent years, possibly because of contemporary global warming. Tracking these changes systematically from remote sensing data offers new challenges and opportunities for automated classification methods such as object-based image analysis (OBIA). We present a method for an automatic mapping of lakes combining LANDSAT images, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM), and OBIA. We tested our method for most of the area of the Tibetan Plateau where lakes formed in tectonic depressions or blocked by glaciers and sediments have different spectral colours, and different physical states of water (frozen and not-frozen). We analysed images obtained in 1995 and 2015. For detecting the lakes we used the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) combined with OBIA and a slope map derived from the DEM. Our classification of lakes with an area >10 km2 derived 323 water bodies with a total area of 31,258 km2, which is 2.6% of the analysed area in 2015. The same number of lakes had covered only 24,892 km2 in 1995, so that lakes grew by ~26% in the past two decades on average. The classification had an overall, producer’s and user’s accuracies of 0.98, and a Cohen’s kappa of 0.98, and may be useful step towards quantifying regional-scale hydrological budgets.

Comparing the Capability of Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 Satellite Imagery in Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Using Pixel-based and Object-based Classification Methods

Introduction: Having accurate and up-to-date information on the status of land use and land cover change is a key point to protecting natural resources, sustainable agriculture management and urban development. Preparing the land cover and land use maps with traditional methods is usually time and cost consuming. Nowadays satellite imagery provides the possibility to prepare these maps in less ...

Object-Based Classification of UltraCamD Imagery for Identification of Tree Species in the Mixed Planted Forest

This study is a contribution to assess the high resolution digital aerial imagery for semi-automatic analysis of tree species identification. To maximize the benefit of such data, the object-based classification was conducted in a mixed forest plantation. Two subsets of an UltraCam D image were geometrically corrected using aero-triangulation method. Some appropriate transformations were perfor...

Analysis of Lake Shrinkage across the Tibetan Plateau Using Remote Sensing Technology

Tibetan Plateau is a typical study area of global environment change, and lake is an important ecological factor to reveal ecoenvironment evolution. Thus, monitoring the succession law of lakes on Tibetan Plateau is of great significance to global environment change research. Because of the harsh environment and low accessibility of the plateau, most of the existing methods are always time-cons...

Comparing pixel-based and object-based algorithms for classifying land use of arid basins (Case study: Mokhtaran Basin, Iran)

In this research, two techniques of pixel-based and object-based image analysis were investigated and compared for providing land use map in arid basin of Mokhtaran, Birjand. Using Landsat satellite imagery in 2015, the classification of land use was performed with three object-based algorithms of supervised fuzzy-maximum likelihood, maximum likelihood, and K-nearest neighbor. Nine combinations...
